----------------------------------------- Scanning Process

We will scan male and female heads in six diverse regions throughout China in collaboration with Chinese universities and local industries with experience in ergonomics and human factors. The raw scanning data in the form of point clouds will be brought into advanced CAD software for sorting and the creation of average head size and shape models.

1)  Introduction - The participatants will be introduced to the project, describing its significance and methodology.  Included in the video are also precautionary points required to ensure good scanning result

2) Questionnaire - Survey by questionnaire will be made to get the basic information of the volunteer. For example: the age, gender, original location of his family, where he (she) grows up, etc.  The data will be directly input into a computer database for analysis and classification.

3) Photography - Photo for the participants will be taken for reference and attached to the survey form.

4) Measurement - The participating subject will first have the body weight and height measured. Then, they will have the head measured. Measure by caliper and tape the circumference, length and breadth of the head so as to be a check for the scanning data.

5) Landmarking - 14 Points are to be marked on people’s faces to help confirm the orientation when we start scanning. Then, the landmarks are covered with adhesive dots.

6) Wig Cap Adjustment - A nylon wig cap is donned to compress the hair, making sure to tuck in the hair around the edges and around the ear. It helps flatten the hair to ensure getting a better scanning result.

7) Scan and Data Saving - Get the parameters of the human head by 3D scanning machine, and save the data file. It takes 17 seconds.

8) Form Collection and Data Check - In the end, the questionnaire form will be collected. The validity of the scanning data will be checked to find out whether there is any omission or mistake.
