Accurate anthropometric data lies at the heart of all effective designs requiring close fit with the human body. Without the accurate understanding of the shape and size of the human body supplied by the science of anthropometrics, designers, engineers and architects cannot achieve the precision needed to design the next generation of successful products in sports, medicine and fashion.

Measurements of the head and face are particularly crucial for design in some specific industries:

Sports

Sports equipment aimed at the head and face of users include helmets for bicycles, motorcycles and sports, as well as protective goggles. Accurate data for use in designing for these applications will improve user comfort and aesthetics, as well as helping to reduce injuries.

Optics

It is estimated that 80% of all Chinese children wear prescription eyeglasses, presenting a vast market for improved products. Non-prescription sunglasses, a discretionary purchase, will be particularly open to improvements in fit and appearance.

Medicine

Accurately fitting facemasks and filters have an important role to play in the prevention of infection disease in health settings. Within surgery, advanced head-mounded microsurgery tools depend on good fit for optimum performance.

Electronics

In both communications and entertainment, head-mounted headphones, headsets and virtual reality interfaces play a increasing role in the development of advanced products.

------------- Deliverables

1. Physical headform models for accreditation by ISO (International Standards Association) for use in product safety standards. We project at least five separate sizes of headform models.

2. Digital headform models for designers. CAD files available in all popular formats will allow designers to create new products directly from the digital data. The mission of Size China.com is to create the first-ever digital database of Chinese head and face shapes. Currently, consumer products such as sunglasses, motorcycles helmets and hygienic face masks are designed using data from Western sources which fails to properly consider good fit for Chinese users. Size China will meet the design need for accurate data by creating a practical, sophisticated design measurement database for use by industries developing the next generation of perfect fitting products.
