Human Ear Model (July 2011)

For years there has been a lack of data on the human ears. This poses a challenge for product designers to accurately design products for the ears. Current head scanning technology cannot capture the complex geometry of ear shape, especially the back of the ear (illustrated in diagram below).

SizeChina is tackling this problem by experimenting with casting human ears. Dental impression material is used to create the ear mold from Chinese subjects, after which plaster cast of the ears are created. A high-resolution 3D laser scanner is employed to capture the ear from different orientation, ensuring the complete geometry of the ear is captured.
